BARNYARD NEWS:

Meet Fabio! This handsome fellow is a cross between an Easter Egger and a Black Copper Maran. The Easter Egger side to Fabio ensures his friendly and calm personality, as well his ability to tolerate both the cold and warm weather. But perhaps the most interesting fact about this breed is their ability to lay eggs in a multitude of colours: blue, green and sometimes even pink. Now the Black Copper Maran side to Fabio can be a bit feisty. Although the hens are generally docile, the roosters have a tendency to be confrontational. This breed originates from France and is known for laying ‘chocolate’ brown eggs.

FARM FACT:

Fabio has been a very busy Rooster as of late and we are proud to announce the upcoming arrival of his brood of chicks. Here is a sneak peek inside a few of our eggs. Placing a light close to an egg to see what’s inside is an age old process called egg candling. It is an interesting method to determine viable eggs.  These chicks still have a way to go but we are excited to meet all the new arrivals in a few week’s time.

FARM FRIEND OF THE MONTH:

Joan of Arc…..a strong independent woman who has taken a stand against the use of traditional laying boxes. She has created a great deal of civil unrest in the barn as she continues to lead the charge on encouraging all the other hens to lay anywhere in the barn other than the boxes, making egg collection both tedious and frustrating.
